It is more than 160 years since sugar cane was first grown in Queensland. During this time the companies which now form Bundaberg Sugar Ltd have played a major role in the development and prosperity of their local areas from the Atherton Tablelands in far north Queensland to Nambour in south east Queensland.

The company’s most significant growth period began in 1972, when the listed Fairymead Sugar Company Limited merged with Gibson & Howes Limited, and changed its name to Bundaberg Sugar Company Limited.

Today, most of Bundaberg Sugar’s operations are based on the Burnett River in Bundaberg and include Millaquin Sugar Mill, Bundaberg Refinery and Packaging Plant as well as Bundaberg Walkers Engineering. In recent years substantial capital funds have been invested in upgrading plant equipment, increasing the capacity of Bundaberg Refinery and Millaquin Mill.

Bundaberg Molasses was established in 1994 in Oakey near Toowoomba. The plant was designed and strategically located to serve the growing feedlot industry in southern Queensland and northern NSW.  Bundy Molasses can process up to 40,000 tonnes a year of molasses liquid feed

We pride ourselves on being a generational family employer, with many families dedicating their working lives to us; sons, mothers and grandfathers. Additionally, we are humbled by our employees who spend their entire careers with us, our longest serving employee spent just shy of 65 years working with us in the Refinery.

As a mainstay of the local community, during the sugar crushing season we employ over 350 direct employees and provide a significant income source for Cane Growers.  Every dollar earned in the sugar industry has a multiplier effect in the community of 7 times worth close to $1 billion to the Bundaberg region’s economy.

Bundaberg Sugar is a major employer in the region and we recognise our responsibility to the community. We provide training opportunities to youth as well as career paths such as apprenticeships. Employment opportunities within the company are as diverse as our business, from cane farming employees to sugar packing to administrative support services.

The company actively supports local recruitment, education, youth, health, welfare, emergency services, the environment, culture and the arts.  As a cane farmer and a sugar miller for over 140 years, Bundaberg Sugar appreciates the importance of developing and maintaining strong relationships with the farmers who supply cane to its mill. We look forward to a long future ahead with “Queenslanders working together”.
